Family Ledger

Family budgeting · double-entry · AI-ready

Your family's books, kept by your AI assistant.

Photograph a receipt, drop in a bank statement, or just ask “how much did we spend on groceries in September?” Family Ledger records it as proper double-entry bookkeeping, so the numbers always add up.

Sign in with Google, Microsoft or Apple. Works with ChatGPT, Claude and any MCP-compatible assistant.

And how much have we spent on food this month?

How it works

From paper receipt to balanced books in three steps

No category menus, no manual typing. You talk to the assistant you already use.

1

Connect your assistant

One click in ChatGPT or Claude, or paste a personal token into any MCP client. You choose read-only or read-and-write access, and you can revoke it at any time.

2

Hand it the paperwork

Paper receipts from any country, QR fiscal receipts, bank statements as PDF or CSV. The assistant reads them; Family Ledger checks that the totals match before anything is booked.

3

Ask anything

Balances, spending by category, month-over-month, net worth. The assistant answers from your real ledger, not from a guess.

What you get

Everything a household needs, nothing it doesn't

Receipts that categorise themselves

Items are matched to expense categories from your family's own history. Confident matches post automatically; uncertain ones wait for a quick look.

Bank statement import

Upload a PDF or CSV. The format is detected automatically, duplicates are skipped, and the next statement from the same bank is read instantly.

Several currencies, honestly

Each transaction keeps its real currency. Reports can show each one separately or convert everything to one using daily exchange rates.

Built for two (or five)

Everyone has their own login. Everyone sees the whole budget, and regular members change only what they entered. Tags like “husband”, “wife”, “kids” replace piles of accounts.

Reports you can trust

Expenses by category, income and spending by month, and net worth over time. Share an anonymous spending snapshot with a single link.

Your data stays yours

Every family has its own separate database file. Download a full backup whenever you like, or delete the whole family and everything in it.

Why double-entry

Because an AI should never be able to “lose” a euro

Every transaction is recorded twice: where the money came from and where it went. Debits and credits must balance, or the entry is rejected.

That single rule is what makes it safe to let an assistant write to your books. A misread receipt can't quietly corrupt your balances: the totals don't add up, the assistant gets an error with the reason, and it fixes the data.

You don't need to know accounting. It runs underneath. If you're curious, it's all there to explore.

Weekly shop, €28.30

One purchase, two sides, always equal

AccountDebitCredit
Expenses · Groceries28.30
Assets · Card account28.30

Expenses went up, the card balance went down. The sides match, so the books balance.

Control

The assistant helps. You stay in charge.

Scoped, revocable access

Give an assistant read-only access, or let it record transactions too. Tokens are stored hashed, can expire, and are cancelled at once if you block a user or change a password.

The assistant reads, we categorise

The AI supplies receipt data. Choosing the expense categories is done by Family Ledger from your family's history, so one bad guess can't write straight into your postings.

No admin powers for agents

Assistants can't manage users, change the chart of accounts, restore backups or delete the family. Those stay behind your own signed-in session.

Nothing is silently rewritten

Postings are never edited in place. Fix a mistake by deleting and re-entering it, so the history stays honest.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need to understand accounting?

No. You can use Family Ledger entirely through your assistant and the regular screens. The double-entry structure works in the background, and it's there to learn from if you want to.

Which AI assistants work with it?

Anything that speaks MCP (Model Context Protocol): ChatGPT and Claude connectors, Claude Code, Cursor and others. Connect with a one-click sign-in or a personal access token.

Does it work outside my country?

Yes. Paper receipts from anywhere can be read by your assistant and sent in with their items, and bank statements import from PDF or CSV. Some countries' QR fiscal receipts are fetched automatically.

What does the AI get to see?

Only what you grant: read-only or read-and-write access to your family's books through your own token. When Family Ledger itself uses an AI model to help read an unusual bank statement, account and card numbers are masked first.

Can I use it without any AI?

Absolutely. Enter transactions by hand, scan receipt QR codes, import statements and read reports in the web app, which works on the phone as well.

Can I host it myself?

Yes. It runs from a single Docker command, keeps data in SQLite, and supports several families on one server.

Which languages does it support?

The interface and the starter chart of accounts come in English and Russian, selectable per person.

Give your household a real set of books.

Set up in a couple of minutes. Connect your assistant, hand it a receipt, and watch the books balance.
